Not just street food, a state of the Art Vucciria

Not just street food, a state of the Art Vucciria

The route starts from the Martorana, one of the most precious Sicilian jewels and witness of the different cultures that have met on the island over time. The Martorana, in fact, is a Byzantine church built in the Middle Age whose structure was enriched with new elements included after the arrival of Albanian exiles in Sicily in the fifteenth century.

The church shows different styles and ornamental motifs, which make it a brilliant representation of Sicily as a cultural crossroads, and showing itself as a triumph of frescoed vaults, mosaics and gold decorations that culminate in the central dome of Christ Pantocrator.

The itinerary continues with a visit to the Church of San Cataldo which, built in the 12th century, is one of the symbolic places of Palermo arabo-normanna, and then towards the Kalsa in order to arrive, passing through the famous Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, to the Caracciolo downhill, considered the authentic entrance to the neighborhood of Vuccirìa known for the historical market of the same name. Right here, you can taste typical dishes at Osteria Dadalìa, which is located right in the center of the market.

We continue after lunch to reach a more ‘secret’ and definitely unique place: the Museo delle Maioliche Stanze del Genio. A treasure that is located in the ancient Palazzo Torre Pirajno near the Fountain of the Genius, and which hosts almost 5,000 examples of Italian majolica tiles painted between 1500 and 1900.

The project was born from a private initiative of the collector Pio Mellina, and was then enriched with majolica of excellence like those coming from the Amalfi Coast of Vietri sul Mare. The structure itself is, moreover, a work of art made of painted floors and walls covered with majolica.
